Instead, Samsung scared CEO Stephen Elop away from Google’s mobile OS and the rest, as they say, is history. Nokia will soon be out of the mobile phone business once it dumps its devices and services division onto Microsoft as part of a $7.2 billion deal, but the company apparently plans to make waves one last time by unveiling its first Android phone next month.
According to well-known gadget leaker @evleaks, Nokia will indeed launch the Android phone that has been making waves in the rumor mill for the past few months as the “Normandy.” The launch name will supposedly be “Nokia X” and in his latest Twitter post about the device, @evleaks claims to have uncovered the phone’s specs.
In line with a leak on Monday from a Vietnamese online retailer, @evleaks claims that the Nokia X will feature a dial-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4-inch WVGA display, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, microSD support, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 1,500 mAh battery, dual-SIM card support and six different color options. It also looks like the phone will not have access to the Google Play store, and will instead rely on a Nokia-run Android app store as well as third-party stores like the Amazon Appstore.
The Nokia X is expected to debut next month at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain. There’s still no word on pricing but judging from the specs and from Nokia’s current strategy in emerging markets, we can likely expect this phone to carry a shockingly low price tag.
